The Basics

Redmond, Bicycle Capital of the Northwest, is located in King County to the east of Kirkland and roughly to the north of Lake Sammamish. It is well known as the home to Microsoft and Nintendo as well as the many tech companies that support these corporate giants. Due to the many tech workers who live here, the area is very affluent but also diverse with housing options from suburban neighborhoods to rural horse properties and everything in between.

Schools

Redmond is served by Lake Washington School District, one of the largest in the state. It has 31 elementary schools, 12 middle schools, and 8 high schools. These include the International Community School, ranked #39 on Newsweek’s 2014 America’s Best High Schools, and several “choice schools” which are small, built around themes or areas of interest and use innovative approaches to education.

Entertainment

In the past, Redmond's downtown core has been a sleepy mix of strip malls, chain restaurants and independent shops. There is a very nice regional mall, Redmond Town Center that houses many national stores although lacks the large anchors you will find in Bellevue. In the last few years there has been a renaissance in the downtown area. New apartments and condominiums have been built along with a couple of new hotels. To support the influx of new residents, a mix of new independent restaurants such as Prime, Tipsy Cow Burger BarMatador and Blue Sardinia has surfaced.

Recreation

Redmond is home to the large regional park at Marymoor. Located along the slew and encompassing 640 acres, it is home to soccer fields, a bicycle velodrome, a large off leash dog park and a climbing wall. Additionally, it hosts a summer concert series. The venue can hold 5,000 concert goers and is a popular place to enjoy warm Northwest summer evenings.
